Mary Kay: OK, Dave, what is Section 508?
Dave Powell: Section 508 refers to the 1998 amendment to Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. The amendment states that all electronic and information technology that is purchased or developed by the United States federal government must be accessible to people with disabilities.
Mary Kay: OK, Dave, does this act pertain only to federal agencies, or are there any state and local governments who are affected by this as well?
Dave: Section 508 specifically applies to federal agencies and to educational institutions. But most state and local agencies must operate under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which also require that systems be accessible to people with disabilities.
