Last week, Dave Powell talked about “metacognition.” This week Dave defines “reciprocal teaching.” So I ask you, do you know your e-Learning Lingo?

Mary Kay: So Dave, tell us about reciprocal teaching?

Dave Powell: Reciprocal teaching is a learning method in which students take turns acting as the teacher either in a pair or in small groups. Other roles the students may take include clarifying concepts, asking questions and asking for predictions.

Mary Kay: All right, Dave. What are the main benefits for this teaching strategy?

Dave: Allowing students to assume the role of the teacher and to help their peers helps them in turn to draw additional meaning from study materials and readings. Also, students tend to retain information better when they are able to interact and discuss it with peers.
