Announcer: The e-Learning Lingo Podcast.

Mary Kay Lofurno: Good afternoon, and welcome to the fifth episode of “The e-Learning Lingo Podcast Series.” My name is Mary Kay Lofurno. I’m the Marketing Director here at SyberWorks and your host today.

Last week, Dave Powell, our SyberWorks Documentarian, discussed a term used in e-Learning development, alt-text. This week he will talk about the concept of minimalism in instructional design.

So I ask you, do you know your e-Learning Lingo?

[theme music]

Mary Kay: Hi Dave. Please tell our audience what minimalism means in an instructional design context.

Dave Powell: Minimalism is an instructional design approach described by John M. Carroll that stresses the importance of giving learners meaningful tasks early in training and allowing them to make and correct their own mistakes.

Learners are supported as they make mistakes rather than being guided step by step through the learning situation.

An example of this might be an online supervisor training course where the student tries various ways to give a fictional employee their performance review and discovers the employee's reaction to each. The student can adjust their approach as they learn which communication methods generate the most positive responses from the fictional employee.

Mary Kay: Thanks, Dave.

Dave: My pleasure. Talk to you soon.

Mary Kay: This is Mary Kay Lofurno, Marketing Director at SyberWorks.
