Announcer: The e-Learning Lingo Podcast.

Mary Kay Lofurno: Good afternoon and welcome to the fourth edition of the e-Learning Lingo Podcast series. My name is Mary Kay Lofurno, and I'm the marketing director here at SyberWorks, and I'm your host today.

SyberWorks has created the e-Learning Lingo Podcast as a free service to academia and the e-Learning industry at large. The e-Learning Lingo Podcast is a forum to inform, reach out, and encourage discussion with students, teachers, academics, professionals, and industry personnel by providing information on the concepts used within the discipline of e-Learning and Web-based training.

When you talk with the training manager or someone else in the e-Learning industry, you may find that they use a lot of different terms and jargon. The e-Learning Lingo Podcast series will focus on various terms used in the e-Learning industry, and how they are used. Each week, the podcast will feature one or two terms that relate to e-Learning, Performance Management, and Human Capital Management.

The audio file for each podcast will be posted on the e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog, along with an accompanying transcript of the show. The e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog allows listeners to comment on each episode in three different ways. Listeners may post comments on the e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog.

If listeners wish to call in and leave feedback instead of posting feedback on the blog or leaving Web-based voice mail, there will be a call-in line where you can leave your message about each show. The number is (206) 350-8757.

The e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog is located at http://www.boggse-Learningchronicle.typepad.com/elearning_lingo_podcast/.

Last week, Dave Powell, our SyberWorks Documentarian, discussed a term used in Performance Management and Human Capital Management: the balanced scorecard. This week, he will talk about a very important term used in e-Learning development: alt text. So I ask you, do you know your e-Learning lingo?

Mary Kay: Hi, Dave! So tell our audience, what's alt text?

Dave Powell: Alt text is an HTML attribute that allows text to be inserted to describe objects, usually images, that appear on Web pages. Alt text also provides a text description that can be read out by a screen reader, so that a person with a visual impairment can hear and understand the nature, purpose, and content of on-screen objects.

Using alt text in your online training is important because it is one of the primary requirements for developing accessible e-Learning. The SyberWorks e-Learning Podcast series just completed a six-part series on developing accessible e-Learning. I recommend that you check it out. We will talk more about accessibility in an upcoming e-Learning Lingo Podcast, so stay tuned.

Mary Kay: Great information. Don't forget! Dave has posted about himself on the e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog, so check it out when you get a chance. Thanks, Dave.

Dave: My pleasure! Talk with you soon.

Mary Kay: This is Mary Kay Lofurno, marketing director at SyberWorks. Thanks for listening to the fourth episode of the e-Learning Lingo Podcast. This week, Dave Powell talked about alt text.

The episode four podcast audio and transcript will be posted on the e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog. Please feel free to join the discussion by leaving us your comments by phone, Web-based voice mail, or blog posting. We really want to hear from you.

Next time on the e-Learning Lingo Podcast, we will talk about a term used in e-Learning design. Until then, have a great week.
