Last week, Dave Powell discussed cybersquatting. This week, Dave explains the theory of operant conditioning. So I ask you, do you know your e-Learning lingo?

Mary Kay: Hi Dave! So what’s operant conditioning?
David Powell: Operant conditioning is a theory that consequences can modify or shape voluntary behaviors. Four very common types of consequences are: positive reinforcement (receiveing a reward), negative reinforcement (removing an adverse stimulus), punishment (applying an adverse stimulus), and extinction.
The last term isn’t as extreme as it sounds. Extinction is actually the absence of any consequence for a behavior. When a behavior receives neither favorable nor unfavorable reinforcement, the behavior will also tend to occur less often.
