Announcer: The E-Learning Lingo Podcast.

Mary Kay Lofurno: Good afternoon and welcome to the first edition of the e-Learning Lingo Podcast Series. My name is Mary Kay Lofurno, and I'm the Marketing Director here at SyberWorks, and I'm here to tell you about our latest podcast series, the e-Learning Lingo Podcast.

SyberWorks is creating the e-Learning Lingo Podcast as a free service to academia and the e-Learning industry at large. The e-Learning Lingo Podcast is a forum to inform, reach out, and encourage discussion with students, teachers, academics, professionals, and industry personnel, by providing information on the concepts used within the discipline of e-Learning and web-based training.

When you talk with the training manager or someone else in the e-Learning industry, you may find that they use a lot of different terms and jargon. The e-Learning Lingo Podcast will focus on the various terms used in the e-Learning industry and how they are used. Each week, the podcast will feature one or two terms that relate to e-Learning, Performance Management, and Human Capital Management.

The audio file for each podcast will be posted on the e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog, along with an accompanying transcript of the show. I'm very excited about the e-Learning Lingo Podcast series, because it will offer some very different features than our other two podcast series.

First and foremost, Dave Powell, our SyberWorks Documentarian, will be providing the weekly definitions and examples of the various phrases. Dave has 30 years experience in writing and editing, with a master's in communications, specializing in science journalism. Throughout the course of his career, he has worked in PR, marketing, technical writing, and magazine editing for various technical publications.

The e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog will allow listeners to comment on each episode in three different ways. Listeners may post comments on the e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog.

If listeners wish to call in and leave feedback instead of posting feedback on the blog or leaving Web-based voice mail, there will be a call-in line where you can leave your message about each show. The number is (206) 350-8757. The e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog is located at www.boggse-Learningchronicle.typepad.com/elearning_lingo_podcast.

So let's get going. This week's term is the advanced distributed learning initiative. So I ask you: do you know your e-Learning lingo? Stay tuned.

Mary Kay: Hi Dave! Great to have you here. Let's get started. What is the advanced distributed learning ADL initiative?

Dave Powell: The advanced distributed learning ADL initiative is a collaborative effort to use information technologies to modernize structured learning. Its ultimate goal is to provide access to the highest quality education and training which can be tailored to individual needs, and delivered cost-effectively wherever and whenever it is required. ADL also sets the standards for SCORM courses, but we will talk more about SCORM another time.

In regards to the organization itself, the ADL website says, “The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, OUSDP and R, was tasked with leading a collaborative effort to harness the power of information technologies to modernize structured learning. Through the sponsorship of the OUSDP and R, the advanced distributed learning ADL initiative was formed, as a developer and implementer of learning technologies across the Department of Defense, DoD”.

ADL employs a structured, adaptive, collaborative effort between the public and private sectors to develop the standards, tools, and learning content for the learning environment of the future. The vision of the ADL initiative is to provide access to the highest quality learning and performance aiding, which can be tailored to individual needs and delivered cost effectively anytime and anywhere.

The ADL website is located at www.adlnet.gov.

Mary Kay: Terrific, Dave! Thanks for a good start.
