Mary Kay Lofurno: Hello, Mary Kay Lofurno, Marketing Director here at SyberWorks. Welcome to the 141st episode of the e-Learning Lingo Podcast Series. Last week, Dave Powell talked about the acronym SCAMPER. This week, Dave defines genetic epistemology.
So, I ask you, do you know your e-learning lingo?

Mary Kay: Hi, Dave! So tell us about genetic epistemology.
Dave Powell: Genetic epistemology is a theory about the origins of human knowledge that was proposed by Swiss psychologist and philosopher Jean Piaget. It says that children pass through stages of cognitive development with unique and important characteristics.
For instance, during the earliest phases a child is not aware of the permanence of objects. So hiding a toy can cause the child to lose interest in it. At a more advanced age, the child gains the ability to think of objects as still existing, even when out of sight, and will begin to look for missing objects.
The four knowledge acquisition stages that Piaget identified are sensorimotor from birth to age two; preoperational, age two to seven; concrete operational, age seven to 11; and formal operational, age 11 and up.
