Announcer: The e-Learning Lingo Podcast.

Mary Kay Lofurno: Hello, this is Mary Kay Lofurno, Marketing Director here at SyberWorks. Welcome to the 104th episode of the e-Learning Lingo Podcast Series. Last week Dave Powell talked about Trojan Horses. This week Dave defines Open Source Software.

So I ask you, do you know your e-Learning Lingo?

[theme music]

Mary Kay: Hi, Dave, tell us about open source software.

Dave Powell: Open source software is computer code or scripts for which the original instructions, also known as source code, are widely available for use and modification by anyone with sufficient skills.

Mary Kay: All right. There’s always a lot of chatter floating around about open source software, Dave. Tell us about some of the benefits of open source software.

Dave: The user community can access, modify, and redistribute open source software for little or no cost. The Linux operating system is one of the most widely used pieces of open source software today. Other popular examples include the Open Office application suite and the GIMP image editor.

Mary Kay: All right. Thanks, Dave. Have a great afternoon.

Dave: You too, Mary Kay. Talk to you soon.

Mary Kay: This is Mary Kay Lofurno, Marketing Director at SyberWorks. Thanks for listening to Episode 104 of the e-Learning Lingo Podcast. This week Dave Powell talked about open source software. The Episode 104 podcast audio and transcript will be posted on the e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog.

Next time on the e-Leaning Lingo Podcast, we’ll talk about a term used in learning theory. Until that time, have a great week.
