In this edition, we're going to be talking with Stuart Campbell, Director of Software Engineering here at SyberWorks, about his recent article, “AICC and the LMS.”

Mary Kay: Hi, Stuart. It’s great to have you here on the SyberWorks e-Learning Podcast.
Stuart Campbell: It’s good to be here. How are you?
Mary Kay: Very well, thank you. All right, let’s get to it. I know you recently wrote an article, “AICC and the LMS.” So without getting too much into your piece, can you explain your approach to the subject?
Stuart: Sure. Based on the last article I did on SCORM, I didn’t want this to be something that was just almost like a cut-and-paste of the SCORM and just applying AICC principles to it. So, given the difference between SCORM and AICC, then what I wanted to do was just give some detail into the background of how an AICC course is structured.
It’s a file-based course. All the files exist on your system. You’ve got the CRS file, which is your course file. You’ve got your assignable units, your descriptor file. So I just wanted to give some background into where all that information is stored and how it comes to become an AICC course on the LMS.
But really, the one whole point that I wanted to make, in the whole thing, was to just highlight the cross-domain course content. Because there a user can have a course, which the content doesn’t reside on their server, but with AICC, can be accessed from an LMS, across the Internet. And it can be recorded, scores can be recorded, time can be recorded, but actual content doesn't exist on your own server.
And that’s really one of the strong points that AICC has. It’s one of the reasons that most customers look for implementing AICC, is to look for that cross domain content, where they’re not responsible for content, either being on a hosted server or their own server, but it’s taken care of by someone else. That’s really the main point of the article, is to highlight that piece of an AICC course.
